Five Steps to De-Cluttering Your Home
Typically with the change of weather, comes change in our
lives, change of clothes, change of responsibilities and changes we wish to
create or are created for us. This is when reorganization becomes key.
De-cluttering is an amazing change of lifestyle and how we relate to “tangible
objects” amongst us. Practicality becomes the main source of change that comes
with de-cluttering. Keeping what we actually use and keeping some we may have
use for the near future and some for simple decoration. To de-clutter is not to
derive you of having a beautiful functional use of space but rather emptying
out and organizing it so it has a purpose for any of the aforementioned
reasons.
Here are Five Steps to help you De-Clutter your home:
1)
Define
the type of de-clutter: Is this seasonal? Transitional? Just too much
stuff? Identify the change you are experiencing and your emotions about it. Don’t
force the de-clutter process, but rather see its benefits.
2)
Why
De-clutter: Are you having a party? Are you selling your home? Why do you
want to de-clutter? Knowing and understanding the why of what you are doing,
will keep you focused and motivated to continue especially when you are
exhausted and question yourself throughout the process.
3)
What will
you do with the stuff: Have in mind what you plan to do with items you no
longer want or use. Do you plan to sell them? Give them away to a charity? Do
you know who can use them? Make prior arrangements for all items so you don’t
place the clutter and create more clutter that you have no idea what to do
with.
4)
Embrace
your new space: Once the reorganization has occurred, embrace the empty or
organized space and put it to use! What have you always wanted in your home?
How do you want to use the space? It can be a great time to redecorate and
change themes for seasonal, transitional stages or holidays.
5)
Have a
system: Once you are satisfied with your de-cluttering and reorganization,
try to maintain it by having a mental system of putting items where they belong
and not buying too much stuff. Maintenance throughout the months and years will
help greatly in making your home look and feel organized and useful.
De-cluttering is a physical and mental cleanse if you choose
to embrace it as such. Being organized helps us achieve our potential each day
when we know and can easily find what we need and use our home space for its
intended use. Visually, it helps us feel calm and focused when we see that our
household is in order, and therefore we can give time and attention to other
areas of our life, work and relationships.
